The 2nd beta (B1…) of Christophe’s upcoming book, “Prototype and script.aculo.us,” was released yesterday by the Pragmatic Programmers. It now features the whole contents about script.aculo.us, and is 95% content-complete.
At about 390 pages, it’s close to its final size, the only missing elements in there currently being 4 tiny Trac commits and the to-be-coded stuff for Prototype 1.6 (such as custom events).
All existing readers got an e-mail notifying them of the update and providing a link so they can generate their updated PDF. If you haven’t grabbed it yet, now is the time!

Fantastic! I’ve been anxiously awaiting this. Will you let us (the beta PDF readers) know what sections are updated when the Prototype 1.6 stuff is added? And I assume this update is just the addition of Scripty, with no major updates to the Prototype section?
I just want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything new. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Prototype section of the book – so many little morsels of Prototype Goodness that I wasn’t aware of! Thanks for writing such an informative and entertaining book.
I will order now, read asap and write a detailed review about it.
Thanks for information. Azar
Yeey i purchased it.. i do hope it will also mention drag & drop nested tree’s and how to create new nodes etc.. :D Could not find that anywhere yet.
“script.aculo.us, and is 95% content-complete.”
W O W !! save…4 tiny Trac Commits and the to-be-coded stuff- such as “custom events” – for Prototype 1.6. Now is the TIME..for a PDF Update. But HOW ??
PleeZ..Guide ! Thanks !
yeah
I have “B1.0 printing, July 2007” – so I assume thats the updated one?
Bought the pdf just a few days ago, so I’m not sure :D
And I really have to say: really really great job on that book. Absolutely needed for everyone working with Prototype/scriptaculous.
Thanks ! Thank you!:)
cool job!
SV Obrai: you should have received an email with instructions to update. It’s pretty easy, just go to the book’s page at PragProg, click the Update my PDF button, fill in your information, and you’re good to go.
Chris: I’m sorry to say the nested D&D thing is not covered. That’s because it’s regarded by Thomas as highly experimental. However, the related options are pretty easy to figure out from the functional test files for it (you get those with the Subversion and the public distros as well). Still, be aware that d&d on trees holds a high confusion/complexity potential.
That’s great. I missed effects.
Sorry for not stay on topic. Where can I find information on prototype browser compatibility. Is IE fully supported? Google/Documentation couldn’t help. Thanks.
Bernd: Prototype fully supports IE6+, Firefox (I’d say 1.5+, 2+ certainly), and Safari (2+ for sure, perhaps 1.3+). We’re also in the process of making Opera9 fully supported.
As we’re having a much easier time supporting WebKit than Saf2, any WebKit-based browser should also be, implicitly, supported. Which means just about everything runs fine on stuff such as, say, Konqueror.
It is so good a job!
Wow. I did not know that, I have to update.
Thanks Sam
yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
wow pls tell me the latest update ….......
I know it´s a little offtopic but I’m lazy to subscribe to a ML just to submit this :-) I have made a XML for adding prototype’s site (http://www.prototypejs.org/api/) to the FF/IE7 Search Engines and I hope it to be put on the main API page along the other options. Just put a link with window.external.AddSearchProvider(url) with url pointing to this XML (hope it doesnt get scrambled):
<?xml version=”1.0” encoding=”UTF-8”?> <opensearchdescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/"> <shortname>Protoype</shortname> <description>Search Prototype API</description> <inputencoding>UTF-8</inputencoding> <image type="image/x-icon" height="16" width="16">http://www.prototypejs.org/images/fav.png</image> <url template="http://www.prototypejs.org/api/{searchTerms}" type="text/html" method="GET" /> </opensearchdescription>Good news! Thanks!
